About Dr. Elliott Lasser
Dr. Elliott Lasser made profound contributions to UCSD, the San Diego community, and the medical field at large. When UC San Diego opened its campus in 1968, Dr. Lasser was appointed as the university's first Chair of Radiology. In building the UCSD Department of Radiology, he attracted top faculty from across the nation, laying the foundation for excellence.
More importantly, Dr. Lasser reshaped the future of the new Medical School by persuading The Regents to grant UCSD four-year accreditation. Although initially reluctant due to the absence of an on-campus hospital, The Regents were convinced by Dr. Lasser’s vision to use Hillcrest Hospital as the primary teaching facility until a campus hospital could be established. His leadership set UCSD on a path toward medical distinction.
